For the first part of this trip we road cab forward. Being my first time in the cab of an Alco switcher I simply stood in the center of the cab, watching forward and backward. The view in out the front of the cab was obstructed by the GTW caboose we were pushing. The other direction over the long hood seemed to give the scenery a whole new look. Much of the right-of-way on heading in this direction was lines with trees behind people's homes and along the parks. The leaves were changing colors and set a nice tone for our excursion.
At one point both out and back we did have to cross a major road. These grade crossings are always the most nerve racking as far as I'm concerned. Both times that I've ridden in the cab of a locomotive over a grade crossing some moron driver tries to run the train. I wish we could get more people in to locomotive cabs just to see how frequently drivers do such stupid things. |
